The Clintonville High School was on lock down last Friday because of alleged threats that were received after a video from a pep rally was shared across social media that critics say is offensive to Native Americans. The video shows students at a pep rally appearing to take part in a mock tribal dance set to Native drumming.
In response, the Clintonville Police Department has issued a statement on the situation:
“The Clintonville Police Department has the primary goal of protecting students during this emotional time. After the events of last Thursday, we learned there was a possibility of planned protests to take place in our community. In order to be certain we could maintain law and order, I met with school officials, members of the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office, the Waupaca County Emergency Management Office and the District Attorney. We developed a plan to address safety in the event a peaceful demonstration were to occur, protesters would be allowed to exercise their first amendment rights in a safe manner. Likewise there would be a planned law enforcement presence so that no demonstrators would be put at risk while maintaining the safety and security of students and staff.
Any threat against a school or a particular individual is treated with the utmost seriousness. A thorough investigation will be done by the police department and an appropriate response will be sought. The utmost concern is safety, and the gravity of the threat, the identification of the person or persons instigating the threat and the ability to carry out the threat are all factors that are considered when determining an action plan. All investigations are confidential and information will not be shared as that could jeopardize the inquiry. We have been in communication with area law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office as we look into comments that were posted on social media.
The Clintonville Police Department and Clintonville School District will always take every step possible to ensure the safety of the students and staff of the Clintonville School District. ”
