Steve A. Verg, age 62, of Caroline passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at UW Hospital in Madison from injuries sustained in a home explosion.
Steve Alan Verg was born on January 3, 1957 at Clintonville Hospital to Kenneth and Doris (Diedrich) Verg. He grew up in the Caroline / Tigerton area and graduated from Tigerton High School in 1975. Steve worked for some years on his parent’s dairy farm. He was united in marriage on July 2, 1977 to Dawn M. Fournier at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Big Falls. The couple continued farming for some time but by the mid 1990’s he started V & S Builders out of Caroline. Steve was a real handyman who built houses, garages, additions, and more for lots of folks all around the area. During the winter months he also plowed snow to stay busy.
Steve was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline, where he was active as an usher. He served several terms as an officer on the town board with the Town of Grant, Shawano County. Steve also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Caroline Fire Department. He was very proud of being a Caroline Lions member where he often lent a helping hand and was a part of every project or activity. Steve always loved helping others in need.
In his younger days, he liked pitching or playing first base for the Caroline Cougars. Then he coached Little League in Caroline for a number of years. His other interests included playing sheepshead, collecting sap to make maple syrup, camping trips up north, deer hunting locally, and elk hunting in Colorado. Steve enjoyed cooking for family and friends at the cottage in Mattoon; especially when he could use his smoker to make meat or seafood. He will be remembered most for his wonderful sense of humor and his happy-go-lucky personality.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dawn; and two children, a daughter Wendy (Lee) Hangartner and a son Lee (Kayla) Verg. There is one brother, Terry (Jill) Verg and one sister-in-law, Rosie (Jack) Bazile. There are four nephews: Travis (Kim) Verg, Cody (Summer) Verg, Shawn (Kathy) Bazile, and Shane (Amy) Bazile. There are seven great nieces and nephews: Alexis, Jaxon, Owen, Miles, Dakota, Cheyenne, and Bridget. He is further survived by many other relatives and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents Ken and Doris; a sister-in-law Cheryl Verg, an uncle Loyd Verg, a cousin Dennis Verg, and his father and mother-in-law, Leonard and Ardis Fournier.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline. Rev. Craig Nehring will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 9:00 AM until time of service, BOTH days at the church. Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Marion, is assisting with the arrangements.
