Wisconsin State Superintendent Carolina Standford-Taylor says there are several reasons for the current teacher shortage. She says her Department of Public Instruction is working with lawmakers to try to encourage more people to go into the education field. Standford-Taylor says low salaries, the school calendar and the need for teachers to work in rural areas of Wisconsin are all contributing to the shortage. In the past she has suggested Act-10, which allows school districts to limit salaries and benefits, may have played a role.
