A jury in Waupaca County convicted a repeat sex offender for the sexual assault of a teenage victim in 2012. Leroy Whittenberger was found guilty of three counts of second-degree sexual assault. Attorney General Josh Kaul says Whittenberger is the first conviction to result from the recent testing of backlogged sexual assault kits in Wisconsin. Kaul said, “a survivor who waited years for justice has finally received it.” Whittenberger has three prior sexual assault convictions from Lincoln and Marathon counties. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
