John Wood and Dave Landers, Pulaski Community Middle School teachers, are giving students a hand’s-on experience that brings them close to nature. For the 14th year, PCMS students have gathered sap from maple trees outside their school and will be boiling the sap down to produce maple syrup on Friday. Throughout the day, PCMS classes will come out to view the process. To make maple syrup, the excess water is boiled from the sap. It takes 40 parts maple sap to make one part maple syrup (10 gallons of sap makes one quart of syrup). Come watch as students boil the sap to reduce it to maple syrup. We’ll meet in the PCMS lobby at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5. From there, we’ll travel behind the school where the project is being worked on. You’ll have the opportunity to interview teachers and students about the hand’s-on learning project and collect photos and video for your reports. Last year, students enjoyed the syrup they helped create by serving it with ice cream.
