A military veteran who spent eight years playing the Lottery with numbers chosen for his and his wife’s
birthdays, claimed a $50,000 Powerball prize Thursday in Madison. The retired man from Viola (Richland/Vernon Counties),
population 707, matched four-of-fi ve numbers plus the Powerball in the Feb. 9 drawing.
Robert Hill purchased a ticket at Campbell’s One Stop in Soldiers Grove (Crawford County) and selected numbers 1, 2,
3, 7, and 39 and a Powerball of 25. Hill told Lottery offi cials that he uses his birthday and his wife’s birthdays for his number
selections. He stated that he used those numbers for the past eight years while playing twice weekly.
Retired since 1995, Hill called his son and brought him along to claim the prize “to make sure it was truly a winner.” He plans
to use his winnings as a nest egg.
The Powerball win was one of four in Wisconsin on Feb. 9. Campbell’s One Stop will receive a $1,000 retailer incentive
based on two percent of the prize amount.
Odds of winning the $50,000 prize for matching four-of-fi ve numbers plus the Powerball are 1 in 913,130.
