Last week, three Shawano County Library staff attended the Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) conference that was held in Springfield, Illinois. Library assistants Paige Crawford and Nancy Hammond and director Kristie Hauer were selected to present a session on planning and implementing escape room programs in libraries. Their session was 1 of 40 selected for the conference from a total of 120 that were submitted nationwide. Shawano County Library began offering escape rooms in September 2017 and have so far completed 184 escape rooms with nearly 1100 participants. Escape rooms are a real-life, timed experience where participants work as a team to compile clues and solve riddles and puzzlesinorder to “escape.” Each month, Shawano County Library offers a new and different thematic escape room, so participants can return again and again. To date, the escape room has hosted families, groups of friends, church groups, school field trips, local business staff meetings, and many more great groups!
