Just days after Donald Trump was voted as the next President of the United States, many Democrats upset with the results began protesting all across the country.
Most protests were peaceful in nature, however some led to vandalism, property damage, and over 100 arrests. Denise Riley of the Shawano County Democratic Party appeared on the WTCH Breakfast Club, and believes part of the reason for the unrest is they’re scared of the claims Trump made on the campaign trail.
“I think there’s a lot of fear out there,” Riley said. “About deporting people and rounding up people to send them out of the county, there’s a lot of young people out there who have friends or family members who are targets, and they’re scared.”
While Riley says she understands the emotions behind the protests, she doesn’t foresee the protests as a long-term issue.
“We’re going to have to wait and see how this shakes out. I understand the anger and frustration, but I have a felling it’s just going to be short-lived at this point.”
The state Democratic Party released their statement about the results: “Like so many of you, I am disappointed by Tuesday’s results. However, while these were not the results we hoped for, the people have spoken, and now it is up to us to come together to move our state and our nation forward. Despite our disappointment, we must not get discouraged and walk away from the process. We must unite and work for the American dream we all believe in.”
