Leonard Robert “Sleepy” Hess, Jr., age 79, of Shawano, passed away on July 25, 2018 in Green Bay. Leonard was born on January 29, 1939 in Shawano, the son of the late Leonard G. and Vera (Hoffman) Hess, Sr. Sleepy grew up in Gresham on the family farm. He served our country in the United States Army. On December 17, 1960, Leonard was united in marriage to Virginia Hacker in Shawano. He owned and operated a trucking company, retiring in 2008. Leonard loved camping and traveling with his family. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and was a big Richard Petty Fan. Leonard was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano.
Sleepy is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Virginia; his daughter, Linda (Ken Kobs) Herlache of Shawano; his special little girl, Lukenna Lindner; two sisters, Sandra Welch and Carol Hess both of Gresham; two brothers, Donald Hess of Grafton and Lester (Sandy) Hess of Gresham; his sister-in-law, Sandra Martens; brother-in-law, Warren (Jean) Hacker; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his son, Eugene; son-in-law, Clayton “C.J.” Herlache; his parents; one brother, Edward “Eddie” Hess; one sister in infancy; and his brother-in-law, Daniel Martens.
Funeral services for Leonard will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano with Rev. Dr. Timm Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Friendship Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Shawano AMVETS Post #10. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano and again at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated.
