A new ordinance in New London will change salaries of alderpersons and its elected officials for meetings attended.
Instead of receiving a flat salary, they will now receive a base compensation and then will be paid 30 dollars for each council and committee meeting they attend. Alderpersons yearly salary will decrease from $4,000 to $3,000.
Mayor Gary Henke said that if alderpersons do their part, their salaries won’t suffer.
“If they attend they normal amount of committee meetings, they should be able to make the same amount or a little bit more,” Henke told TCHDailyNews.com
There was discussion about implementing a yearly salary cap of $4,200 for alderpersons, but that did not come to fruition.
Mayor Henke would like to see alderpersons present at “as many committee meeting as possible” because that is where the crux of city legislation occurs.
“Our committee meetings is where all the discussion [and] the real decision making takes place,” he said. “By the time it gets to council its pretty well researched and hashed out.”
Henke’s yearly salary of $6,400 won’t change and he will also be paid $30 for each meeting he attends.
