The city of Clintonville has seen a recent rash of vehicle break-ins and thefts in the overnight hours of Tuesday, November 1st, and Wednesday morning the 2nd. According to Clintonville Police Chief James Beggs, it comes down to common sense for residents.
“The biggest problem we have right now is people are not locking their vehicles,” said Beggs. “If people would just secure their homes, secure their vehicles, it would deter a lot of the thefts that are taking place.”
According to Beggs, most vehicles that have experienced some sort of theft had its doors unlocked. Most of the items stolen range from loose change to cellphones, essentially anything that can be easily transported.
Beggs claims that some people have even reported nothing stolen from their vehicles, however they do noticed items out of place, or their glove box may have been left open.
Beggs says one way to prevent these actions are to be aware of the activity in your neighborhood.
“Take notice if someone or a group is in an area they should not be, call the police department and have us check it out. If you see people taking unusual interest in things outside of somebody else’s residence or your own, call immediately. If it looks unusual, give us a call, let us check it out.”
Beggs says his department is aware of the recent string of thefts and believes they are related. The thefts date back as far as a few months.
The Clintonville Police are looking into the situation, but they’ll need the help of the public to report all suspicious activity.
