Summer is winding to a close and after a successful first year of holding a Fall Color 5K run/walk, Navarino Nature Center will once again be putting on the popular event. It’s all part of the Fall Family Fun Day on Saturday, Oct. 7. Director Tim Ewing wants to ensure that people know it’s different from the Color Run events.
“When we’re saying fall color, we’re referring to the fall colors on all the leaves of the trees” Ewing said. You’re going to run through the trails and enjoy all those fall colors, the purples, the golds, the reds, the oranges, so there’s no powder involved.”
There’s a one-mile kids fun run to go with the 5K, but that will be held in the refuge area because there will be open hunting seasons at the time of the event. Registration is open now, but there will be fee increases as the day of the run draws closer.
“It’s another fundraiser at the nature center to enjoy the outdoors and help the educational programs at the nature center” Ewing said.
The fall color run leads into a great day of activities for the whole family at the Fall Family Fun Day, says Naturalist Kaylee Lietz.
“There’ll be crafts, face painting, wagon rides, candle dipping, an apple cider press with apples. We’re still adding more as we go along. It’s a great time and it’s a free event.”
There are some fees for food, face painting and bird feeder building.
