The Shawano R/C Flying Club will be welcoming pilots from across Wisconsin and Minnesota for their 31st annual radio-controlled airplane show and fun fly.
The show put on by the R/C Flying Club provides a great chance to check out some of the planes people have newly built, as well as some of the vintage planes, but no matter what, there will be a lot of action in the sky.
“There’s constantly airplanes up in the air flying around,” said R/C Flying Club Secretary Blair Johnson. “We have a guy from Fond Du Lac that usually comes up with a jet with a real jet engine in it and puts a show on. It’s a fun time, you can come out have some brats, hamburgers, have a soda and sit and relax and watch some good flying.”
Johnson adds the show is also a great opportunity to learn more about, the planes, or even the hobby in general, which is not difficult to get in to.
“If anybody wants to talk with [the pilots], ask them a little bit about [the planes], what kind it is, what type of flying does it do, how to get into the hobby, all those questions will be answered to anybody that wants to come out there and enjoy the day,” he explained.
The R/C Club puts the show on as an event for the community to promote remote control flying, which is why there’s no cost to come out and spectate. Johnson says the hobby even leads to other types of flying and interests.
“We have kids that are in our club that are now going to be commercial pilots. We have one person that flies and he also has a real stunt airplane that he goes to competitions.”
The event runs from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., about a mile-and-a-half south of Shawano on Highway 22, across from Maple Lane. There will also be signs posted on where to go.
