Those hoping to have a referendum that would open the option of Mattoon having a school district, got a set back at the latest meeting.
Last week, an appeals board upheld the Antigo School Boards decision not to go to referendum by a 6-1 vote. Last year, the school board voted to close Mattoon Elementary.
A group wanted to see Mattoon break-away from the district, and form their own district which would include an elementary school for grades K through 6.
It’s unknown what the next course of action will be for those hoping for the break-away, but the group did say they are exploring their options.
