Following a review of its 15-year Chronic Wasting Disease Response Plan, the Department of Natural Resources will continue to work on existing action items and implement new recommendations received during its review process.
In 2016, the DNR sampled more than 6,000 deer from chronic wasting disease, which nearly doubled the mark set in 2015. Among them, 447 deer tested positive.
The DNR credits hunter cooperation over the past year and say they are grateful will how hunters have responded for their increase in numbers.
“There’s a preliminary quota, a preliminary bonus of public land, preliminary bonus private land numbers out there,” said Wildlife Biologist Kay Brockman-Mederas about the meetings held in Shawano. “There’s a comment period that started [Monday] through April 13 where you can put comments in for your county where you hunt and the council will look at those comments.”
Comments, recommendations, and numbers then go to the DNR Board for final approval. The CDAC meeting for Shawano County will be held at the middle school at the LGI room on April 17. There’s also a spring hearing held at the same location Monday, April 10.
