SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – As June is recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, Shawano County officials are encouraging residents to learn the warning signs of abuse and report concerns involving older adults.
Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner said the partnership between law enforcement and Adult Protective Services is critical in identifying and responding to cases involving vulnerable older residents.
“Adult Protective Services and law enforcement are dedicated to raising awareness about the physical, emotional and financial abuse, neglect and exploitation of older adults,” Lenzner said.
While physical abuse often receives the most public attention, Shawano County Adult Protective Services Specialist Brenda Marquardt said emotional abuse can be equally damaging and is often much harder to detect.
“Emotional abuse can show itself through verbal attacks, threats, rejection, isolation and belittling acts,” Marquardt said. “Because there are not always visible signs, it can sometimes go unnoticed by family members, friends and even the victims themselves.”
Marquardt said Adult Protective Services works with law enforcement, healthcare providers, community organizations and family members to investigate reports and connect older adults with resources and support when needed.
In addition to emotional abuse concerns, Marquardt said Shawano County has seen an increase in elder abuse cases involving financial exploitation. Those situations can range from sophisticated online and overseas scam operations to instances where trusted family members or caregivers misuse an older adult’s finances.
Officials encourage residents to remain vigilant and watch for warning signs that an older adult may be experiencing abuse, neglect or exploitation. They say reporting concerns early can help prevent further harm and connect victims with assistance.
Anyone who suspects elder abuse is encouraged to contact Shawano County Adult Protective Services or local law enforcement.
June’s Elder Abuse Awareness Month serves as a reminder that protecting older adults is a community-wide responsibility and that awareness remains one of the strongest tools in preventing abuse.
