SHAWANO, WI – Despite challenging conditions during the recent snowstorm, staff and volunteers at the Shawano County Humane Society worked tirelessly to ensure every animal remained safe and cared for.
Volunteer Kris Tetting says the team anticipated difficulties getting to the shelter and quickly turned to the community for help. “We knew that staff might have a really hard time getting into the shelter and if they could get there it might not be plowed, so they reached out to the community and again this community is so amazing,” Tetting said.
At one point during the storm, the shelter had 16 cats and 14 dogs available for adoption. Many of the dogs were placed into temporary foster homes to ride out the storm, which ended up making a big impact.
“We had seven dogs who were at the shelter and they all fostered somewhere for the snowstorm,” Tetting explained. “So they got to hunker down inside with a family and six of those seven dogs got adopted after that.”
Now, as warmer weather melts the snow, the shelter is seeing a noticeable increase in adoption interest. Tetting adds that fostering remains a critical need, and those interested can learn more by visiting the Shawano County Humane Society’s website.
