NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers of an important change to this year’s inland trout season, which will begin earlier than in previous years.
The 2026 inland trout harvest season is set to open on April 4 and will run through October 15, giving anglers additional time to fish Wisconsin’s inland streams, springs, and spring ponds. Officials say the earlier opener is aimed at expanding opportunities, especially during a time of year when other fishing seasons are still closed.
The change comes as trout populations remain strong across much of the state, a key factor in the decision approved during last year’s spring hearings with the Wisconsin Conservation Congress.
To participate, anglers must have a valid 2026–2027 fishing license along with an inland trout stamp, both of which are required for the season.
The DNR is also encouraging anglers to review updated regulations, including any changes to bag and length limits, and to take precautions to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by properly cleaning gear and disposing of bait responsibly.
