SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner says last weekend’s powerful snowstorm kept deputies busy responding to dozens of incidents across the county as dangerous conditions took hold.
According to Lenzner, deputies handled 95 non-reportable accidents, 11 property damage crashes, and one injury-related accident during the storm. Crews also responded to five traffic hazards and roughly 60 stranded vehicle calls as drivers became stuck on snow-covered roadways.
Lenzner says the severity of the storm made travel extremely difficult at times, with deep snow and poor visibility creating dangerous conditions for both motorists and emergency responders. Despite the high number of calls, he noted there was at least one small positive. “The only good thing when you have this much snow, it slows people down a little bit, so your accidents are usually not injury-related accidents,” Lenzner said.
As cleanup continues across Shawano County, the sheriff is urging residents to remain cautious, noting that many roads still have slick spots due to below-freezing temperatures.
Lenzner says drivers should continue to take it slow, allow extra travel time, and stay alert as crews work to clear remaining snow and ice in the days ahead.
