MADISON, WI- The road to a state title runs through the Kohl Center as both Seymour High School and Bonduel High School prepare for semifinal action in the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament.
Top-seeded Seymour High School returns to the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2011, leading a loaded Division 3 field at the Kohl Center. The Thunder (27-1), champions of the Bay Conference, open Thursday at 1:35 p.m. against fourth-seeded St. Croix Central High School after a decisive sectional win over Xavier. Seymour owns three state titles (1997, 2001, 2006) and is chasing a fourth against a bracket that also includes second-seeded Lake Mills High School and perennial power St. Catherine’s High School, which has won six state championships. St. Croix Central, making just its second state appearance, earned its berth as champion of the Middle Border Conference and looks to play spoiler in the semifinal round.
In Division 4, top-seeded Bonduel High School returns to Madison for the second straight season after finishing runner-up a year ago. The Bears (25-3), champions of the East Division of the Central Wisconsin Conference, face first-time qualifier Cambridge High School in Thursday’s 6:35 p.m. semifinal after defeating Marathon in the sectional final. Standing between Bonduel and a championship game return is a competitive field that includes second-seeded Juneau High School, making its first state appearance, and third-seeded Regis High School, which returns to state for the first time since 2015. With both Seymour and Bonduel holding No. 1 seeds and strong postseason momentum, Northeast Wisconsin will be well represented on the state’s biggest high school basketball stage as teams battle for titles March 19–21.
