Shawano County Highway Department Kept Busy By Blizzard

SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Shawano County Highway Department crews put in long hours during the latest winter storm as they worked to keep roads across the county as safe as possible for travelers.
Highway Department lead Grant Bystol said crews were out throughout the storm response, handling a broad range of roadways that included state highways, county highways, and smaller side roads. Bystol said the workload has been intense, with crews putting in 18- to 20-hour shifts, grabbing only a couple hours of sleep, and then heading back out again.
Even with the calendar now in March, Bystol said the department is not ready to ease up on winter operations just yet. He says, “Our crews will likely wait until early April before considering removing plows and wings from some trucks, and only if the extended forecast shows a sustained warm-up.”
The Highway Department’s message to drivers remains the same during late-season storms: slow down and give crews room to work. Officials also remind motorists to allow extra time to reach their destinations whenever winter weather makes travel difficult.
