SHAWANO, WI – As temperatures begin to warm up across Shawano, local officials are reminding residents to stay alert as more people head outdoors. Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff says drivers should use extra caution as activity increases in neighborhoods, parks, and playgrounds.
Musolff notes that pedestrians and runners are becoming more common along sidewalks and streets this time of year, and drivers must stay focused behind the wheel. He says some people walking outside may be distracted, especially if they are wearing headphones or listening to music, making it even more important for motorists to remain attentive.
Pedestrians also share responsibility when it comes to staying safe. Musolff encourages those walking or running, particularly with earmuffs or headphones, to stay aware of their surroundings and keep an eye on traffic.
The police chief also reminds drivers to slow down and remain alert when traveling near schools. As the weather improves, Musolff says more children will be playing outside and may unexpectedly run into the street.
In addition, Musolff is urging ATV and UTV riders to pay attention while traveling through the city as more off-road vehicles begin using designated routes during the spring season.
Officials say staying alert and following basic safety practices can help prevent accidents and keep the community safe as outdoor activity increases.
