NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced seasonal weight limits for several highways across north central Wisconsin as spring thaw conditions approach.
Beginning at noon on March 9, vehicles traveling on certain state highways will be limited to six tons on single axles and ten tons on tandem axles, with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 24 tons.
In the local area, the restrictions will impact sections of Highway 52 in Marathon, Shawano, and Langlade counties. Additional limits will also apply to portions of Highway 153 in Marathon and Shawano counties, as well as Highway 107 in Marathon County.
WisDOT officials say the seasonal weight restrictions are put in place each spring to protect roadways as warming temperatures cause the pavement structure to soften, making it more vulnerable to damage from heavy vehicles.
Transportation officials also note that the start date could change if colder weather delays spring thaw conditions in the region.
