SHAWANO, WI – The Shawano School Board has approved nearly $1.77 million in budget reductions for the 2026-27 school year as the district works to balance its finances. District leaders say the plan focuses on operational efficiencies and staffing adjustments while keeping core classroom programming intact.
Superintendent Kurt Krizan said the majority of the savings will come through attrition, meaning retiring or departing teachers will not be replaced. Additional reductions include scaling back certain contracted services, reducing some stipends, and making changes to employee benefits.
Krizan emphasized that the goal was to protect direct classroom instruction and minimize the impact on students as much as possible. However, one board member voted against the proposal, expressing concern that the cuts could eventually affect class sizes and student achievement.
District officials say the approved reductions are part of a broader financial strategy to maintain long-term stability while continuing to meet the educational needs of Shawano students.
