SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – There was encouraging news inside the Shawano County Board Room this week as officials discussed progress toward adding another judge to help manage the county’s growing caseload.
Clerk of Courts Ethan Schmidt informed County Board Chairman Tom Kautza that the proposal to create an additional judicial position has already passed through the State Assembly. The measure could be taken up by the State Senate as early as March, and if approved there, it would then head to the governor’s desk for final consideration.
While Kautza says the development is a positive step forward, he cautioned that residents should not expect immediate changes. Even if the position is approved at the state level, the process of appointing or electing a judge and preparing courtroom space would take time.
Kautza noted that the earliest Shawano County would likely see a new judge in place would be 2027. In the meantime, county leaders say they remain focused on managing caseload demands while awaiting further action from state lawmakers.
