CLINTONVILLE, WI – The Clintonville Board of Education is taking a closer look at the district’s athletic programs as it prepares for a potential operational referendum decision this spring. District leaders say the discussion is part of broader financial planning in the event the referendum does not pass.
Superintendent Troy Kuhn told board members that athletics were identified in a recent community survey as one possible area for budget reductions if cuts become necessary. The Clintonville School District currently spends approximately $275,000 each year on athletic programming.
Board members discussed several possible cost-saving strategies, including forming additional cooperative teams with neighboring schools and evaluating the balance between program costs and student opportunities. At the same time, several members stressed the value of athletics in keeping students engaged, motivated academically, and connected to the community.
District officials emphasized that no decisions have been made. However, if the referendum fails, athletic funding, along with other areas of the budget, will likely be revisited as part of the district’s financial planning process.
