Shawano Area United Way Launches Free Tax Assistance After Fundraising

SHAWANO, WI – After its latest fundraising season raising $42,000, the Shawano Area United Way is turning its attention to helping local families during tax season.
Executive Director Uriah Williams says the organization’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, commonly known as VITA, is now fully underway. The program provides free tax preparation services to qualifying households, helping residents file accurate returns while maximizing refunds.
Williams says households earning less than $69,000 annually can receive assistance from IRS-certified volunteers at local VITA sites. The United Way currently has active sites connected in Shawano, Pulaski, and Gillett, all of which are accepting appointments. More information, including scheduling details, is available on the organization’s website.
For families who prefer to file on their own, Williams says there is also a free online option. Households earning up to $89,000 can complete their returns at no cost through MyFreeTaxes.com.
United Way leaders say the goal of the program is to reduce financial barriers, keep more money in local households, and ensure families receive the credits and refunds they are eligible for during tax season.
