WITTENBERG, WI – The Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers girls basketball team is entering the postseason with an unblemished 24-0 record and the confidence that comes with earning a No. 1 seed.
For head coach Nick Mechelke, the undefeated mark is no accident.
“I think our record speaks for the personnel that I have with us this year,” Mechelke said. “This group, pretty much my first six, has played in the last two sectional final games. They know what it takes.”
That postseason experience could prove invaluable as the Chargers once again chase a deep tournament run. Among the leaders with sectional final experience are Rory Salvesen and Melaina Granquist, two players who have been key pieces in the program’s recent success.
Salvesen, in particular, embodies the Chargers’ athletic identity. A standout multi-sport athlete, she is part of a roster filled with competitors who stay active year-round.
“We have six cross-country athletes on my team,” Mechelke noted. “Most of them, if not all, are three-sport athletes.”
That endurance, versatility, and competitive edge have helped fuel Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s dominant season. With battle-tested leadership and a roster built on multi-sport toughness, the Chargers believe they have the pieces in place to make another deep push toward state.
