SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Kitten season is getting underway earlier than usual at the Shawano County Humane Society, prompting an early surge of newborn litters at the shelter.
Kris Tetting with the Humane Society says kitten season typically runs from spring through early fall, when warmer weather leads to an increase in cat litters. However, this year’s mild temperatures have prompted some cats to give birth sooner than expected.
That early influx has staff and volunteers working overtime to care for the vulnerable newborns. Tetting stresses that immediate and attentive care is critical to ensure the kittens survive and thrive.
She says newborn kittens require around-the-clock monitoring and often need to be bottle-fed every two hours, including overnight, much like caring for a human infant. The Humane Society encourages community members to consider fostering or supporting the shelter during this especially demanding time of year.
