WEYAUWEGA, WI – City officials are continuing their work to identify and replace aging lead water service lines, even as recent testing confirms Weyauwega’s drinking water remains well below federal limits for lead.
Water Superintendent Mike Lee says the city does not yet have a precise count of remaining lead lines but estimates that between 70 and 100 properties still have confirmed lead service lines. Lead can enter drinking water through corrosion in older plumbing materials, making identification and replacement a priority for long-term public health.
The city has already begun replacement efforts, with approximately 50 properties included in the first phase of the project. Funding support from a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Safe Drinking Water grant is helping offset part of the cost.
At this time, homeowners are not required to replace lead service lines, but officials acknowledge that future state regulations could mandate removal. In the meantime, Weyauwega leaders are working to build a complete inventory of service lines and are encouraging residents to inspect their plumbing and explore replacement options as the city continues its getting the lead out initiative.
