SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office may soon see the departure of one of its K9 teams, as Deputy Cody Vogue and his canine partner Rascal could be heading to neighboring Menominee County.
Sheriff George Lenzner says the transfer is not yet finalized, but Vogue, who is originally from Menominee County, believes the move would be a better fit for him professionally. If the transfer does happen, Lenzner says the department feels Rascal should go with his handler, noting the pair have worked side by side for the past five years.
Rascal’s departure would leave K9 Ruckus as the department’s only working dog on the night shift while officials begin the process of finding and training a replacement. Lenzner says that process is supported in part by the department’s ongoing partnership with SOS K9, which helps raise money for police dogs through donations and fundraising events such as golf outings.
While Rascal is already well into his service career, Lenzner says it would still be possible, though challenging, to train a new dog to work with a new handler if necessary. The sheriff’s office says it will continue planning for next steps as the potential transfer is considered.
