NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Sturgeon spearing season is getting underway on Lake Winnebago, with thousands of anglers expected to take part in one of Wisconsin’s most unique outdoor traditions. Lake Winnebago sturgeon biologist Margaret Stadig says the season is one of the most popular times of year on the ice, with as many as 11,000 people purchasing spearing licenses.
Stadig notes Lake Winnebago is one of only two places in the country where sturgeon spearing is allowed, making the season a rare opportunity for participants. She is reminding spearers to check with local spearing and fishing clubs for updated ice conditions, especially as changing weather can quickly impact safety on the lake.
Officials also stress that any harvested sturgeon must be registered at one of 10 official stations located around the lake. The registration process helps wildlife managers monitor the fishery and protect the long-term health of the sturgeon population.
