WITTENBERG, WI- Expected dangerously cold weather has prompted the Wittenberg Area Chamber of Commerce to cancel this weekend’s Winter Wonderland celebration, Chamber President Angie Heling Johnson announced.
Johnson said the chamber’s board ultimately felt the safest option was to call off the event rather than encourage families to travel in harsh conditions.
“With the cold weather that is forecasted, we just feel it’s best for the safety of the community to cancel,” Johnson explained. “We think about what could happen if somebody comes to the event and their car breaks down, especially if there are children in the car. We just don’t want those situations to occur.”
While most Winter Wonderland activities were planned indoors, Johnson said the chamber did not want to put families at risk on the roads. She noted that predicting Wisconsin weather is impossible, adding that the board made the call with the community’s best interest in mind.
“Unfortunately, we can’t predict the weather. If we could, we would’ve put our order in a long time ago,” she said. “We appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to gathering again at a different event.”
Although Winter Wonderland is canceled, the popular Festive Tree Display at the WOW (Walls of Wittenberg) space will still go on as scheduled. Johnson said organizers decided conditions were safe enough for visitors to stop in and admire the decorated trees, and hours for the display have been posted on social media.
The children’s coloring contest connected to Winter Wonderland is also continuing as planned. Submitted artwork will be displayed at the WOW space, and contest winners will be announced Wednesday.
