SHAWANO, WI – Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff is urging residents to take extra precautions as longer hours of darkness create more opportunities for vehicle thefts and break-ins. Musolff says thieves often look for easy targets, and valuables left in plain sight can quickly turn a parked car into what he calls a crime of opportunity.
“Don’t leave valuable things in your vehicle,” Musolff emphasized, noting that while window break-ins aren’t common, they do happen, especially during the winter months when vehicles are left unattended for longer periods.
But Musolff says one item has become an increasingly serious concern: firearms. “Don’t leave guns in your car. That’s happened too. Guns are getting stolen out of cars,” he warned.
Musolff stresses that unsecured firearms can lead to dangerous and unpredictable outcomes if they fall into the wrong hands, and he urges gun owners to store weapons properly and never leave them in parked vehicles.
