SHAWANO, WI – Starting January 1, the City of Shawano will assume full responsibility for managing and funding the operations of the local landfill site, marking the end of the county’s involvement in the facility. Under the new agreement, the city will cover all expenses related to operations, closure, and long-term care, leaving the county with no further financial or management role.
County Board Chairman Tom Kautza said the city intends to keep the landfill open for now, continuing to accept foundry dust and generating revenue to cover future maintenance and closure costs. However, Kautza expressed concern that the plan may not be financially sustainable long-term, noting that operational and environmental costs are expected to rise significantly in the coming years. “If they want to guarantee that everything will be fully funded and taken care of by them, have at it,” Kautza said.
The transition aims to streamline management responsibilities, but county leaders say they will continue to monitor the city’s progress to ensure environmental and fiscal obligations are met.
