SHAWANO, WI – As National Move Over Day was observed this past weekend, Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner is reminding drivers that a few extra seconds behind the wheel can make all the difference in keeping people safe.
Lenzner says the message is simple, move over and stay safe. One of the most dangerous places for emergency responders, tow truck drivers, and highway maintenance crews is alongside busy roads where vehicles are passing just feet away.
The Move Over Law, enacted in 2001, requires drivers to slow down and shift lanes when approaching flashing lights, whether it’s a police car, tow truck, or road crew. Lenzner says most motorists in Shawano County do a good job following the law, but constant awareness is crucial. “For the most part, people are very good about this law,” Lenzner said. “There are times when we have violations, but recently we haven’t had any accidents as a result of it.”
The sheriff adds that obeying the Move Over Law isn’t just about compliance, it’s about protecting lives and ensuring everyone makes it home safely.
