SHAWANO, WI – City and county officials in Shawano are revisiting their agreement on when to close the Shawano Landfill, which was originally scheduled to shut down on December 31. The city has proposed keeping the landfill open a few more years to bring in additional revenue while continuing to manage daily operations and cover closure costs. Under the updated plan, Shawano County would assume responsibility for long-term care once the landfill is filled, likely around 2028.
County Board Chairman Tom Kautza raised concerns about the timing of transferring more than $1 million in maintenance funds currently held by the city, arguing that the county should receive those dollars immediately. In response, the committee voted to amend the agreement, ensuring DNR-required annual payments are transferred to the county within 30 days of request.
County leaders say the revised plan gives the city a chance to generate additional revenue while maintaining strong environmental oversight and financial accountability as the landfill nears its eventual closure.
