NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – As Wisconsin’s annual Youth Deer Hunt gets underway, the Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to stay alert and make safety their top priority.
DNR Warden Mark Schraufnagel says the special hunt is open to youth ages 15 and under, but they must be accompanied by an adult. “Because we have the state firearm season going on, all hunters, with the exception of our waterfowl hunters, must wear blaze orange or pink for visibility,” Schraufnagel said.
He also reminded participants that Wisconsin’s mentor law applies throughout the youth hunt, requiring both the mentor and the youth to have proper licenses. Adults must have completed hunter safety or be grandfathered in, and if the youth is under 12 or hasn’t completed hunter safety, they must remain within arm’s reach of their mentor.
The DNR encourages all hunters to practice safe firearm handling, maintain visibility, and follow regulations to ensure Wisconsin’s hunting traditions continue safely for generations to come.
