SHIOCTON, WI- A Shiocton hunting guide has been fined $3,000 and banned from hunting on federal land for illegal bear baiting in the Nicolet-Chequamegon National Forest. 64-year-old Timothy J. Collar will also be prohibited from entering any national forest for one year, including during this year’s bear hunting season. Authorities say trail cameras caught Collar repeatedly placing barrels of bear bait near U.S. Forest Service roads in northern Oconto County. Collar was charged in April and pled guilty to an illegal baiting count before U.S. District Judge Byron Conway. He faced up to six months in jail, but instead received the fine and a restricted ban on federal land hunting and access.
