SHAWANO, WI – Homecoming week is in full swing in Shawano, and the Shawano Police Department is making sure the celebrations stay both fun and safe. School Resource Officer Tyler Thornborrow says while the week is all about school spirit, students should be mindful of their choices.
“We’ll be focusing on talking to the students about positive behavior during all of this,” Thornborrow said. “With spirit days, powder puff football, and all the different activities going on, it’s a little less structured, so we want to remind students to stay safe.”
Thornborrow says he and other officers will be speaking with Shawano High School students about safe celebrations, the risks of unsupervised parties, and the importance of staying out of trouble during the busy week.
But it’s not all about safety, there’s plenty of fun, too. One of the most popular traditions, the Spirit Stick, is back. “If you’re at the high school and you engage in a conversation with somebody, you always have to begin the conversation with ‘Go Hawks,’ Thornborrow explained. Whoever is left holding the Spirit Stick at the end of the week will get pied in the face in front of the entire school, a lighthearted way to cap off the homecoming festivities.
