SHAWANO, WI – As the school year continues, Shawano police are reminding parents that keeping kids safe and successful means paying attention to more than just what happens in the classroom.
“Know who your child’s friends are, know who they’re hanging out with, and know their parents,” said Officer Tyler Thornborrow, comparing the approach to a neighborhood watch. He says open communication at home can help catch problems early, from bullying to safety concerns and keep students focused on learning.
Parents are also encouraged to act quickly if their child’s academic performance begins to slip. Officer Brandi Hoffman says schools and families have resources to work together when concerns arise. “Your student might be doing well and then something happened and now they’re not talking about it, are their grades changing? You have Skyward, you can check some of that stuff,” Hoffman said.
Both officers stress that teachers and administrators are ready to partner with parents to address issues and help students get back on track before problems grow bigger.
