Northeast Wisconsin – The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding consumers to be on alert for flood-damaged vehicles as they shop for used cars.
Officials warn that water damage can be difficult to detect and may not reveal itself until months later, sometimes after expensive repairs are already needed. The DMV recommends checking for musty smells, water stains, or signs of corrosion, and having any used vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchase.
Dealers in Wisconsin are required to disclose if a vehicle has been branded as flood-damaged on the Wisconsin Buyer’s Guide, which also documents a dealer’s inspection and test drive.
