SHAWANO, WI- Shawano County supervisors have approved a new ordinance regulating the use of ATVs and UTVs on county roads, though the decision came with pushback from both a former board member and some current supervisors.
The ordinance, passed by a 21-3 vote on Aug. 27, requires anyone 16 or older to have a valid driver’s license while operating an ATV or UTV on county highways. Riders under 16 are allowed only if accompanied by a parent or guardian. The measure also bans open containers of alcohol for both operators and passengers.
Some supervisors objected, not on safety grounds, but on consistency. Supervisor Joe Miller called the move “premature” and saying the DNR and DOT should create a statewide law.
Sheriff George Lenzner countered that Shawano is acting in line with many other counties. “Since the state does not seem to be acting quick enough, to save lives, we thought we would act on it,” he said, noting that counties allowing ATVs on their roads often create local rules to improve safety.
