SHAWANO, WI – With students back in class, Sheriff George Lenzner is reminding drivers to focus on safety in and around school zones.
Lenzner emphasized the importance of slowing down in marked school zones and staying alert for crossing guards, who are often stationed in cities and villages throughout Shawano County. He noted that distracted driving continues to be one of the biggest dangers on the road, particularly during busy pick-up and drop-off hours.
“We have so much inattentive driving caused by people on their phone or checking a text or answering a text,” Lenzner said, adding that even talking on the phone takes attention away from the road.
Lenzner also urged drivers to obey school bus laws. When a bus has its red lights flashing, vehicles must stop in all directions to allow children to cross safely.
Lenzner said staying alert and following these basic rules helps ensure students, families, and school staff get to and from school safely.
