SHAWANO, WI – Before grabbing that funnel cake or heading to the midway, health experts are reminding fairgoers to think about germs first.
Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Director Nick Mau says one of the most important steps families can take during fair season is also the simplest: wash your hands frequently. “I think number one, just washing hands frequently,” Mau said, noting that handwashing stations are set up throughout the fairgrounds, especially near animal barns.
Mau emphasized that washing with soap and water after touching animals is the best way to prevent germs or diseases they may carry. He also cautioned that even animals kept in cages don’t always want to be touched, and if a bite does occur, it’s important to act quickly. “Anytime we’re getting bitten by an animal, number one thing is first let’s clean the wound. So wash with soap and water immediately after the bite and then let somebody know,” Mau explained.
He added that the Health Department follows up on all reported animal bites to ensure victims receive proper care.
