TIGERTON, WI- A weekend fire has leveled a once-familiar landmark in Tigerton, leaving behind only rubble and memories for the community. The Crossroads building, which for decades served as a local bar and restaurant, was destroyed in a blaze that started late Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning.
Though the business had not been in operation for several years, longtime residents recall the role it once played in the community. Crossroads was a hub for bowling, dart, pool, and softball teams, sponsoring leagues and supporting local activities. Older generations remember it even further back, when the site was known as the Tigerton Hotel, a gathering place dating back decades.
Community member Wally Breitenfeldt said the loss is deeply felt, even if the business had been closed for some time. “Even if it hasn’t been open for a while, there are just so many memories,” Breitenfeldt said. “Whether it was people who played on those teams, spent time at the bar, or hunters and visitors who stopped in over the years, it was a place where a lot of fun and friendships were made.”
Firefighters from multiple departments responded and worked through the night to contain the blaze. Crews poured more than 500,000 gallons of water on the structure before bringing in a local contractor to knock down the remains, preventing the flames from spreading to a neighboring home.
Several families living nearby were displaced, with the Red Cross now assisting them. Community members have also rallied together on social media to provide clothing, food, and other support for those impacted.
For many in Tigerton, the fire means the loss of more than just a building. The site stood as a reminder of community gatherings, family dinners, and local traditions. “There’s just a ton of memories tied to that place,” Breitenfeldt added. “It’s a part of Tigerton’s history that’s gone now.”
