With a smaller roster and plenty of youth, the Gillett Tigers know the 2024 season will come with growing pains. But head coach Paul Herzog believes his group has the talent and work ethic to make strides in eight-man football.
The Tigers return a pair of key seniors in quarterback Jed Herzog and running back/linebacker Clayton Borremans. Jed transitions to quarterback after playing receiver and serving as a backup signal-caller last year. “He’s six-three, he’s got an arm, and as long as we can get our receivers where they need to be, we should be okay,” Herzog said.
Bormans, meanwhile, will again be a two-way player, anchoring the ground game on offense and providing experience at linebacker. Like most eight-man squads, the Tigers rely on athletes pulling double duty.
Numbers are down this fall, with about 16 or 17 players on the varsity roster. That makes every rep in practice and every snap on game day critical. “The season’s going to be how hard they work,” Herzog said. “We’ve got high hopes for them.”
After a slow start to camp, Herzog says he’s seen encouraging progress in the past week. “Practice was kind of iffy the other day, but once they got here and were able to hit someone else, it was a whole different ballgame,” he noted.
With limited depth but senior leadership at key positions, the Tigers aim to stay competitive in the Across The Bay Conference while building confidence in their younger players.
