NEW LONDON, WI – The New London Public Museum put the spotlight on Wisconsin’s official state dog Wednesday with a special event honoring the American Water Spaniel. From 10 a.m. to noon, visitors gathered on the museum lawn to meet members of the American Water Spaniel Club and their dogs, enjoy refreshments, and explore a new exhibit detailing the breed’s origins.
Museum Director Christine Cross says the American Water Spaniel has deep roots in the city. “The breed was developed here in New London, and the first registered water spaniel belonged to Dr. Pfeiffer, who is credited with really kind of developing the breed,” Cross said.
The celebration is part of the club’s 40th anniversary and National Specialty, which runs August 13–17 in New London and Clintonville. Organizers say the event not only honored the breed but also highlighted the region’s role in helping it become Wisconsin’s official state dog.
Visitors also had the chance to connect with breeders, owners, and enthusiasts who are working to preserve and promote this unique piece of Wisconsin history.
