SHAWANO, WI – Northeast Wisconsin continues to experience hazy skies and poor air quality, with no clear end in sight. According to Travis Larson, Forestry and Wildfire Director with the Wisconsin DNR in Shawano County, smoke drifting in from Canada is tied to a growing wildfire crisis north of the border.
Larson says the latest numbers from Canada include 59 uncontrolled fires, 30 being held, and 108 that are currently under control. He warns that the smoke reaching Wisconsin is more harmful than many people realize. “It’s not just like sitting next to a campfire,” Larson explained. “What you’re left with are the worst parts of smoke, carcinogens and other pollutants, which is why people feel more worn down and unwell.”
With many of the fires burning in remote, difficult-to-access areas, officials say efforts to contain them remain a challenge. Until those fires are brought under control, residents in Wisconsin should expect continued haze and air quality concerns.
