SHAWANO, WI- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is issuing a renewed call for safety after more than two dozen people have died in ATV and UTV crashes across the state so far this year. One of the most recent tragedies happened over the weekend in Marinette County, where a 55-year-old man was killed after rolling his ATV. Authorities say he lost control on a trail, failed to negotiate a turn, and was ejected from the vehicle. Although the victim was wearing a helmet, he did not survive. According to the DNR, 25 people have died in ATV/UTV crashes so far in 2025. Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner says he sees similar behavior in Shawano County.
“The majority of people are doing a great job, but you always have a few of those people who don’t follow the rules and drive too fast, so we just want to curb those issues before they become too big of a problem.”
Authorities are urging riders to take basic precautions: buckle up, wear a helmet, and never ride under the influence. For more on ATV/UTV rules and safety courses in Wisconsin, visit the DNR’s website.
